I used to have issues finding a good baby-sitter. I didn't want to leave my kids with just anybody, but you have to get out of the house sometime.
We eventually did quite well, having about four girls from church we could call on. And my daughters are still quite close to those girls.
But now I'm feeling the baby-sitting blues from another direction. My 13-year-old is becoming quite a popular baby-sitter, and tonight she's baby-sitting at the home of a family I don't know.
It's not that I don't think she can handle it. It's that I don't know what's in that house.
I remember when I baby-sitted regularly for a particular family when I was 14. The family seemed great on the outside. The little boy was nice, the parents both had good jobs, they lived in a good neighbourhood. But in every closet was pornography. Tons of it. And I saw it even though I didn't want to.
So I wonder, what is in this house? Are there inappropriate novels that my daughter may look at without realizing it? Is there pornography? Do you know what I mean? We try to shelter our children. Not oppressively, but I don't want their first encounter with sexuality to be so negative and icky. I know you can't totally shelter someone, but I just wonder...
Anyway, I'm walking over to the house tonight with Rebecca to meet the people and check it out. I guess that's all I can do. And then I'll just pray that my daughter will be protected. And I'll send her with tons of her own books so that if she wants to read something, she won't be tempted to look at the bookshelves!
I totally understand about finding a good babysitter. We have two kids, a 3 year old and a 1 year old. Before I was a stay at home mom, I was a pre-school teacher, so I guess I am a little picky. Fortunately we live close to family, but I totally understand how hard it is to find a good sitter.
About Me: I'm a Christian author of a bunch of books, and a frequent speaker to women's groups and marriage conferences. Best of all, I love homeschooling my daughters, Rebecca and Katie. And I love to knit. Preferably simultaneously.
